There are various ways to point a domain name to a different domain or subdomain and one of them is by setting up a CNAME record. When you own a domain name and you've developed a website through some on-line service that provides you with a service subdomain, you can easily link the two by setting up a CNAME record for your-domain.com that points to subdomain.provider.com. What you're going to achieve with this is that www.your-domain.com will be in the browser address bar while it opens the already mentioned website from the servers of the third-party provider. It is essential to know that if you set up a CNAME record, any other records your domain name may have will stop functioning, so you can't have both a CNAME record directing to one provider and working email addresses with another. The CNAME record is always an alpha string, not a number, and in some cases further configuration may be required with the other company.

CNAME Records in Shared Hosting

Setting up a CNAME record through our shared hosting plans is quite easy. Our in-house built Hepsia CP features a section committed to the DNS records of your domains, so you can set up a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted within your account in only a few simple steps. You will find a video tutorial within the same section in which you can see the process first-hand. This feature provides you with a variety of possibilities - if you build a company website on our end, as an illustration, the workers can use their emails with the company domain address, not with the address of our mail server. If you decide to create a website through a different company which offers online web design services, you can easily redirect a domain name hosted here and use it for the site. Last, but not least, if you have an online store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you may set up a CNAME record for the www subdomain and forward it to the main domain address, so all your visitors will be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

Managing DNS records usually seems to be a difficult task to the people with less experience, but the Hepsia hosting Control Panel, which comes with every semi-dedicated plan we provide, is very easy to use. If you want to create a CNAME record for any purpose, all that you have to do will be to choose the domain address or subdomain that you need, choose the type of record, that will be CNAME in this case, then type the value i.e. the domain name or subdomain you are forwarding to. The procedure is quite easy and you can set up the record in the DNS Records section of the CP. Within the hour the new record will be 100 % active and within a few hours it'll propagate around the globe. If you're not sure what you have to do, we've prepared a detailed help article and a short video tutorial on how to go about creating a CNAME record and they are both located within that same section of Hepsia. Of course, you can also get in touch with us for help at any moment.
